Author and former Cosco Inc. vice president Gordon Peters has been an athlete for most of his life. Now 77, he still enjoys competing with and against much younger athletes. His new book, "Racing the Wind: Seventy-Seven and Still Playing Full-Court, Fast-Break Basketball: Achieving Athletic Longevity, A Gift That Keeps on Giving" (published by WestBow Press), offers detailed advice on achieving athletic longevity and reaping the huge mental and physical health benefits that result. He provides practical advice on the importance of good health and staying active and healthy at any age.

"Many Americans are in poor physical condition," says Peters. "Obesity is widespread. The long term health consequences are huge." Peters' assessment is not inaccurate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than one third of Americans are obese.

"Racing the Wind: Seventy-Seven and Still Playing Full-Court, Fast-Break Basketball" is designed to help readers become physically and mentally fit, regardless of age. Peters describes how his athletics and physical conditioning have helped him through some very difficult periods in his life. Peters hopes to open new horizons and expand the perception of what men and women can accomplish physically and mentally over the course of their lives and enable them to reap greater enjoyment out of lives in the process.

"I would encourage every person to get involved in a sport and/or a physical conditioning program involving high aerobic activity, strength, balance, coordination and suppleness," Peters urges. "Your physical and mental capabilities will be greatly enhanced throughout your life. The earlier in life you begin the better off you are going to be."
