When author Gloria Marshall stumbled upon the 100-year-old diary of World War I soldier Sergeant Harold Lantz, she was mesmerized by his story. She embarked on a mission to find Lantz's family and share his story with the world.
Marshall's new book, "My Brothers' Footsteps: Historical Fiction of Six Brothers in World War 1" (published by Balboa Press), is a fictional interpretation of Lantz's diary. The book captures the Lantz family's experiences during the Great War.
Set mostly in Canada and the Western Front battlefields, "My Brothers' Footsteps" details the lives of the Lantzes, a large Canadian family. Six of the Lantz brothers fight overseas in the trenches while the rest of the family remains ever hopeful on the home front.
With both primary and secondary sources, Marshall recreates the horrors of the war in great detail. Her depictions of rat-infested trenches and terrible battles come directly from letters and diaries of WWI soldiers.
Marshall says, "I hope readers feel the pride and patriotism of these young men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country,"
