Georgine Scarpino, sister and author, became inspired after Mercy Hospital, the last faith-based hospital in Allegheny County, Pa. was sold. Mercy Hospital was the first hospital founded by the Sisters of Mercy in the world and the first permanent hospital founded in Pittsburgh in 1847. Wanting to give tribute to the original 13 faith-based hospitals founded in the county, and to analyze what contributed to their demise, Scarpino pens her new book, "The Rise and Fall of Faith-based Hospitals: The Allegheny County Story" (published by AuthorHouse).
"The Rise and Fall of Faith-based Hospitals" is a meta-analysis of the relationship of margin and mission during the rise and fall of faith-based hospitals in Allegheny County. It reviews the various local, state and federal events and factors that impacted these 13 hospitals during their growth and decline from 1847 to 2008.
Scarpino shares the courage, hardships and perseverance of the founders of these institutions, many of whom were women, as they responded to one crisis after another without giving up their commitment to serve the people, especially the poor sick.
"I want readers to take from this account a deep respect for the commitment of the founders of these faith-based hospitals and the challenges associated with remaining faithful to mission, while having to maintain a sizeable margin," Scarpino says.
