Tithing, the donating of 10 percent of one's income per year, can be traced back to the Old Testament, when Abram thanks God through the donation of one tenth of his possessions. A study done in 2013 by Empty Tomb inc., a Christian organization, revealed that parishioners give roughly 2.38 percent of their yearly earnings to their respective churches. While this is a record low, author George Radcliff still believes that number should be lower, as he firmly stands against tithing altogether. He discusses his stance against tithes in his new book, "The Tithing Myth" (published by AuthorHouse).
Radcliff opens his book with the claim that tithing was not present in the Bible, if read correctly. He goes on to cite numerous biblical passages, paying special attention to 2 Corinthians 8-9, at which point God advises that giving as much as one can often yields returns of greater value. Radcliff believes this to be the correct way to give, but notes that tithing was ordained as an Old Testament practice, but never ordained for New Testament churches. Radcliff believes that tithing is a pagan practice, and one that is criminal for churches to uphold.
Radcliff hopes his book will open the eyes of readers to the truth behind tithing, and help them better understand the Bible.
