Evergreen trees are those that retain their foliage year-round, rather than losing their leaves annually. Conifers such as cypress, pine, and fir trees are all evergreens, as are hollies, some oaks, eucalyptus, and rhododendrons, among others. These trees come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. They can be found all over the world, from the harsh outback of Australia to the lush forests of South America.
"Evergreen" written by author Gena Rainaud is a colorful, illustrative picture book that tells the story of a valley down where a forest once grew. The trees were all great. Their limbs branched out and their trunks were all straight. However, there was only one law to earn their keep. They must do something spectacular after the long summer's heat.
One spring day, an evergreen tree enters the forest. He is told by The Great Mountain that in order to stay, he must do something special in the fall. Fall arrives and he remains the same, unable to do anything special while the rest of the forest changes. The evergreen tree is told, he may have to leave. How will he earn his keep at the end of the long summer's heat?
"Evergreen" is an entertaining children's read that will constantly remind readers that no matter how different one is from the rest, he or she can still be very special and is capable of doing something extraordinary with his or her unique abilities.
