Author Gary W. Neidhardt has always been interested in the subject of recovery from alcoholism and drugs for many years. At one time, he started researching William James, Sam Shoemaker, and Charles Towns. But as he continued to look at Charles Towns, the story became larger. As he continued to search information regarding Towns, the more he found. He then realized just how big this story really was, the story of Charles Towns has never been told before.

"King Charles of New York City" (published by AuthorHouse) is a biography of Charles Barnes Towns and a history of Towns Hospital. The story includes Towns' valuable contributions to Alcoholics Anonymous, which represented a huge change-of-heart for Towns near the end of his life as the principles of AA ended up being almost entirely the opposite of the practices that were performed at Towns Hospital. It shows how Towns wished alcoholism and addiction to be treated medically rather than through the penal system. He wished every large city and every state would create a hospital modeled after Towns Hospital to deal with these problems. As a philanthropist, that is why he gave away what had been his secret treatment for nothing to anyone capable of administering it. Since society sold tobacco, alcohol and drugs legally, society should be able to provide hospitalization for those victims that should never have been exposed to such substances by society in the first place.

This highly informative book shows just how much a large player Charles Barnes Towns was in American History. It shows how he had an influence on three U.S. Presidents, and how he was a drug ambassador to China where he displayed some of the characteristics of an Indiana Jones. It also elaborates how much of a conquering hero he was upon his return. It also shows what a prestigious place Towns Hospital really was that had as patients some of the most famous actors of the times, and how the Harrison Act which originated from his ideas, has changed American culture itself.
