GERTIE-Quarterly, Queer Book Club Reveals Its First Selections.
Shipping just in time for the holidays, GERTIE, the new quarterly, queer book club, has made its first selections. GERTIE offers subscribers a choice between a Boy Box (with fiction by a gay writer), Girl Box (fiction by a lesbian writer), or the Queer Box (open to any possibility), each featuring two books, fun extras, and a letter with detail on the authors and why they were chosen.
The books that will be featured in GERTIE's inaugural shipment were hand-selected by the editors of Gertrude Literary Journal following review of more than 45 titles. They are:
"Her Body and Other Parties," a brilliant debut story collection by Carmen Maria Machado (fiction for the Girl Box), which is a finalist for the 2017 National Book Award.
"The Angel of History" by Rabih Alameddine (fiction for the Boy and Queer boxes)-who Michael Chabon calls "one our most daring writers"-which won the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction.
Kate Carroll de Gutes's essay collection (the book that will be in all the boxes) "Objects in the Mirror are Closer Than They Appear," which won the Oregon Book Award for CNF, the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Memoir, and a 2016 Gold IPPY.
"We culled through a teetering stack of books from big and small presses to find the most dynamic stories that would balance each other," says Tammy Lynne Stoner, publisher of Gertrude Journal and director of GERTIE. "With our first selections, we're excited to bring our readers narratives that reflect queer lives in profound essays, an amazing novel, and some cutting edge short stories."
Stoner believes the book club will appeal to all readers, queer or straight-interested in different narratives. "Queer writing isn't just for the LGBTQ community, any more that African American work is strictly for the black community," she says. "These are simply incredible stories told from unique perspectives."
Subscriptions are $42 per quarter, available at gertrudepress.org. All proceeds benefit Gertrude Literary Journal, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and the world's longest consecutively published queer, literary journal. The first quarterly box delivery will ship December 15, 2017.
