G.B. Korten Launches New Cookbook on Filipino Cuisine

NATICK, Mass. - Author G.B. Korten admits that cooking has always been a part of her life. She considers her grandmothers as imaginative and creative cooks and her father as an enthusiastic weekend cook. After earning her certificate in basic cuisine at the La Cordon Bleu in Paris, it prompted Korten to write "Sagana," (published by Xlibris) a cookbook that focuses on Filipino cuisine.

This cook book addresses the universality of food preparation and cookery while it focuses on Filipino cuisine, which is an amalgam of Malay, Chinese, Arab, Spanish and American cuisine-a perfect example of "fusion" food. It describes the intricate relationship of geography and people and demonstrates a commonality of food and its preparation all over the world.

"This book has been re-invented and reformatted and is ready to be in the center stage of global cooking and dining," Korten says. "The style of this food book/cookbook is unique as there are narrations that bring readers closer to the dishes, emulating M.F K Fisher, Nora Ephron and Laurie Colwin. The recipes are written in a comprehensive and gentle manner, same as Julia Child's recipe books."

"Sagana" was originally printed and published in 2003 and again in 2007 and according to Korten, has received glowing feedback from chefs and gourmands in the US and in the Philippines. She hopes that through this cook book, readers will also try to cook and taste Filipino dishes.

About the Author
A former nursing supervisor at Massachusetts General Hospital after earning a master's in science at Boston University, G.B. Korten left nursing to start a career in travel, opening up East West Travel, Inc. in 1983. She leads special interest group travel to remote destinations, as well as barge, river and cruise ships all over the world. A primary, secondary and college graduate of the University of the Philippines, Korten returns to the Philippines annually to attend to philanthropic projects and medical outreach to the Aetas of Bataan and Mangyans of Mindoro. Korten paints in watercolors and holds annual art shows in the US and the Philippines. She is married to Klaus Korten, a retired physician and has two sons, Carlos - in business ventures in the Philippines and Santiago, a physician; Christa, her daughter-in-law takes care of a busy household; Korten dotes on her grandchildren: Nicholas, Josephine and Rafaella.
