STOCKHOLM, N.J.

The more things change - the more they stay the same. It has been 200 years since the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812, but the spirit of what was done at that time lives on to the present. "Gave Proof through the Night" (published by Xlibris) is the third book in James A. Wynne's series of historical fiction novels. In it, he weaves around the central theme of America's reaffirmation to remain free from the ties of the former mother country, England.

In Baltimore, Md. during the final year of the War of 1812, Mary Pickersgill is commissioned by Major George Armistead to make a garrison flag over Fort McHenry that is "thirty feet by forty-two feet", remembered in history as "The Star-Spangled Banner". At the same time, in the small hamlet of Upper Marlboro, three friends set out on adventures of their own. Liam O'Connor, Nathaniel Atkinson, and Malcolm Dalrymple work to free their friend, the elderly Dr. William Beanes, who has been imprisoned by the British for espionage. This sets off a chain of events that ensnares them into the war. They will interact with some of the more colorful historic figures of the time, including the lawyer and amateur poet who penned the words that later became the national anthem - Francis Scott Key.

In writing his novel, Wynne would like to inspire in readers, "a greater appreciation for the struggles fought so many years ago." He tells a story, not just of historic battles that inspire one's nationalism, but one with human characters, "warts and all", that he uses to portray the spirit of the times, down to its social moralities.

Wynne has also collaborated with his son, Jason, a San Francisco 3D artist, to write a moralistic tale based upon his son's collection of original portraits, called "Civilized Animals."
