What do you do when your child has fallen into the trenches of destructive decisions?
In her new book "From Monsters to Miracles," author Anette Edens, PhD, offers solutions for families dealing with adolescent substance abuse. By guiding parents through conflicting parenting styles and encouraging self-examination in the process, she offers solutions toward effective and loving parenting.
"Adolescent substance abuse is becoming the norm and is among the leading causes of death in this age group," said Dr. Edens. "Effective treatment is extremely difficult for parents to find. If I can help even one family, that would be enough."
The death of her youngest daughter drove Dr. Edens to find solutions for families who have been devastated by the nightmare of adolescent drug use and addiction. Her personal experiences augment her 22 years of professional work as a researcher and clinical provider to provide the foundation for her book.
"I have spent countless hours in groups with both adolescents and with parents, and have had the privilege of witnessing the transformations as they heal," said Dr. Edens. "Most parents feel very alone as they witness the decimation of their family relationships. However, we need each other's help and support. We are in this together. No one needs to try to parent alone."

About the author
Dr. Anette Edens left the world of finance to retrain as a psychologist when it became clear that her interests were more about people than investments. Her research focuses on the growing crisis of adolescent substance abuse. After the death of her youngest daughter, she opened a treatment program for young adults and their parents. By working with these families and using her own experiences with an alcoholic husband and troubled teen, she developed keen insight into the relationship between personal behavioral choices and the destructive behavior of others. Dr. Edens currently practices as a licensed psychologist and is president of Cornerstone Recovery in Houston.
