Gun control laws have been a hotly debated topic in recent months because of the devastating events at Sandy Hook Elementary school and the movie theater in Aurora, Colo. In author Frank Clarke's 2011 book, "Tipping Point: A Tale of the 2nd U.S. Civil War" (published by AuthorHouse), a similar mass shooting prompts familiar calls for action.

"I truly feel we are on the cusp of a revolutionary turn-of-events," says Clarke earnestly. "It can be a moderately good thing or it can be a very bad thing."

Set in the near future United States, a brutal school shooting shocks the nation. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Second Amendment, long a thorn in the side of certain political factions, is repealed and a handful of states secede from the Union over the issue. The act signals the start of a second U.S. civil war, but as the conflict wears on, the two sides move further apart in their views and their politics, making reconciliation more and more improbable.

An excerpt from "Tipping Point":

"There will be civil war in this country before there is meaningful civilian disarmament. Some days, talking to the anti-gun loons, I feel like I'm standing with a crowd of eight-year-olds, ankle deep in gasoline, trying to keep them from playing with matches."
