James R. Milam, Ph.D., spent many years writing and lecturing on his discoveries about alcoholism and the physical factors that set alcoholics and non-alcoholics apart, while suggesting a stigma-free way to understand and treat the disease. He co-founded several highly effective model addiction treatment centers. For 30 years, his classic book "Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism" (1981) has been a best seller in the field, and is the essential guide to effective treatment at addiction treatment centers worldwide. Millions of alcoholics owe their full recovery to the new understanding brought about by Dr. Milam.

"Under the Influence" has been called a revolutionary classic. Co-Evolution Quarterly calls it “Vital, simple, world-changing information." Mel Schulstad, co-founder of the National Association of Alcoholism Counselors, said, “Under The Influence" will advance by light years the understanding of alcoholism and the recovery process.â€'

Dr. Milamâ€s long-awaited new book, "Ending the Drug Addiction Pandemic: Discovering the Liberating Truth", corrects disinformation about psychoactive drugs. It also brings awareness to the fact that millions of alcoholics and prescription drug addicts are callously being destroyed by disinformation.

For the first time, his research reveals and documents how alcoholism is a brain syndrome regularly misdiagnosed as a psychiatric problem, and that it is being destructively treated with drugs and psychotherapy. This disinformation then blames patients for “abusingâ€' psychoactive prescription drugs that are inherently addictive, even when pills are taken exactly as prescribed. Dr. Milam says that "getting millions of trusting patients addicted to drugs is enormously lucrative for psychiatrists and for the pharmaceutical industry, which explains exactly why we have a prescription drug pandemic." "Ending the Drug Addiction Pandemic: Discovering the Liberating Truth" is an important work, arriving at a time when addiction is at record highs, and without doubt will take its place alongside Dr. Milamâ€s earlier work.

About the Author: Having officially retired 25 years ago, James R. Milam, Ph.D., says that once this book is published, at age 91, he can “really retire.â€' He earned B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from the University of Washington, and practiced as a licensed clinical psychologist, before becoming the behavioral research director in a Seattle lab conducting research on alcoholism. He was a decorated P-47 fighter-bomber pilot in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, flying 86 combat missions.
