NEW YORK, Nov. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ Today, the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a book, Why Can't Grandma Remember My Name?, written by the Foundation's President, Kent L. Karosen, and co-authored by Chana Stiefel. The book explains Alzheimer's disease using artwork created by children juxtaposed with art created by Alzheimer's patients, demonstrating the power of art therapy for all ages and a way for parents and family to share with a younger audience what is happening to Grandma or other loved ones.
"With the Alzheimer's epidemic at an all time high, it's never been as important to increase the amount of research being conducted in an effort to find a cure," said Kent L. Karosen, President/CEO Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation. "In the meantime, we must make it a priority to educate those around us about the disease, and through Why Can't Grandma Remember My Name?, my hope is that a younger audience will have a better understanding of the disease that affects their loved ones."
The book is now available for purchase at the start of Alzheimer's Awareness Month. All the book royalties go to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation in the quest to find a cure for the disease. The book addresses Alzheimer's which directly affects 5.3 million Americans and an expected 16 million people by 2050. The disease costs our country over $200 Billion annually and is estimated to cost over $1.1 Trillion by 2050 unless there is a cure.
"As someone who has made art for the last 35 years and taught in many universities, in seeing the results of the paintings of Alzheimer's patients, I can feel the strength and the impact of the artwork featured in Why Can't Grandma Remember My Name?," said acclaimed artist and sculptor, Ursula von Rydingsvard. "Creating art gives Alzheimer's patients autonomy and a sense of dignity in the midst of a disease that often leave them feeling powerless."
In conjunction with the book launch, the Fisher Center is pleased to announce a partnership with the luxury department store, Bloomingdale's, where they will be displaying artwork featured in the book in stores and hosting multiple book signings in New York City (November 2nd from 12:30-2:30pm), Aventura (November 10th from 2:00-4:00pm) and Boca Raton (November 11th from 1:00-3:00pm), which have some of the highest rates of Alzheimer's disease in the United States. In addition, artwork from the book will be recreated and showcased at an art exhibit at the Williams McCall Gallery in Miami with custom reproductions created by FrameWorks (November 3rd from 6:00-9:00pm). Lastly, the Fisher Center will also be promoting the book at USF St. Petersburg Barnes & Noble on the college campus (November 5th from 10:00am-12:00pm).
