SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ Educate and Empower Kids (EEK) has become increasingly aware of the need for materials that acknowledge and explore the connection between media messages and body image for both girls and boys. Body image issues are not only an issue for women and girls; men and boys must also navigate the tension between societal standards of masculinity and their own individual happiness and body satisfaction.
Educate and Empower Kids (EEK) announced today the release of its first children's books:
Messages About Me: Wade's Story, A Boy's Quest for Healthy Body Image
and
Messages About Me: Sydney's Story, A Girl's Journey to Healthy Body Image.
To combat the barrage of negative messages kids receive every day, authors Dina Alexander, MS, and Kyle Roberts, MS, have created this series of fun, relatable children's books to help parents and teachers illustrate and reinforce positive body image.
"Our kids receive hundreds, possibly thousands of messages every day from friends, family members, advertisements, social media, and elsewhere about our bodies," says EEK founder Dina Alexander. "Parents need to start talking with their kids early and often about the amazing things our bodies can do, instead of just focusing on how they look."
Besides telling a thoughtful, entertaining story, each Messages About Me book also features a workbook with questions, activities, and tips for parents and educators designed to facilitate meaningful discussions with kids about this important topic. In an age where kids "live" on social media and are constantly comparing themselves to others, this is a very timely resource!
Messages About Me helps kids see they are not alone in feeling confused and sometimes bombarded by the messages all around them. Characters Sydney and Wade each follow an individual journey as they first struggle and then, with the help of parents and friends, come to understand they are happier being themselves and that they are truly beautiful the way they are.
Written by parents and professionals who themselves have struggled with body image issues and who have used the latest research to understand the impact of cultural, familial, and media messaging, these books provide an excellent way to begin or continue discussing healthy body image with children.
EEK, 501(c)(3), provides resources to parents and educators guiding children in the digital age. This must be intentionally done by teaching digital citizenship, media literacy, and online safetyincluding education about the dangers of online porn. We have authored 30 Days of Sex Talks, 30 Days to a Stronger Child, and How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography, and offer online resources, and community workshops across the country.
