Set in the backyard of a large Victorian mansion located in a very small town, sisters Maleeya and Kieran go on a journey through the scarlet door to find seven ingredients needed to make a cure for their gravely ill sister Sierra. With obstacles blocking each element, they must face their inner fears and use common, everyday items to outwit Raven, an evil fairy who would like nothing more than to see them dead.
"I hope that readers see themselves in the characters as they journey beyond the scarlet door and that they realize all kids have fears that can be faced and overcome," shares Read, on the book's lesson. Moreover, the book is family oriented; "the sisters never forget they must answer to their parents, or pretend they don't exist."
A snippet from "Beyond the Scarlet Door":
"Something isn't right!" said Maleeya, staring at the scarlet door. "It looks like we could walk through the doorway."
The girls raced to the end of the emerald chest. They were facing a room filled with chairs and tables that looked to be at least one hundred feet tall.
