MANCHESTER, England
Drawing upon her personal experience of growing up during World War II, author I.P. Aspinall wrote her new children's fiction book, "Dragonfly House and Giant in a Tea Cup" (published by Lulu).
"Dragonfly House and Giant in a Tea Cup" centers on two young boys named Luke and Jack. In the first half of the book, the boys are both 8 years old, while in the second they are 13. The first half of the story deals with the implications of danger and privation on the two boys, who enlist the help of magical creatures to overcome obstacles. The second half involves the children and their families enduring a drought, forest fires and the threat of wolf attacks on their land during what was considered peacetime following the war.
"This is a time before computer games, texting, cell phones, the Internet and the World Wide Web," Aspinall says of her book's setting. "TV was very basic black-and-white. The story tells of a time when life was much simpler and kids could play outdoors without worry."
An excerpt from "Dragonfly House and Giant in a Tea Cup":
"In Dragonfly House the Summers were good
Out on the lake or up in the wood
You could swim on a fish
Or talk to a fly
Even feed a bear as he passed by
When the rain was dark and pouring
Dragonfly House was never boring"
