NEW YORK

People consistently operate at stress levels higher than what is healthy, according to information gathered by the American Psychological Association. While stress is a reality, there are methods for effective management that no longer make stress and happiness mutually exclusive.

Family therapist, life coach and educator Deborah C. Moore, PhD has more than 25 years of experience researching how the brain and nervous system influence people's behavior, personality and motivation. Her careers as a licensed marriage and family therapist and a lieutenant in the New York City Police Department have provided Moore with a first-hand look at the far-reaching impacts of untreated stress.

"After spending 20 years in one of the most dangerous and stressful occupations - law enforcement - I witnessed how the demands of the job can lead to unhealthy relationships, decreased life expectancy and physical ailments," Moore said. "Learning how develop inner resiliency and strength became the cornerstone for my survival."

The powers of mismanaged stress are visible not only in all jobs, but also in family life, self-esteem and everyday problems. Moore has collected her findings, experiences and advice in her new book "The Mindfulness Response: Inner Happiness Every Day." Based on her decades of research on the effects of stress on individuals both physically and emotionally, the book offers step-by-step techniques for developing internal stability and managing stress.

"We cannot change everything we might wish to change in our lives," Moore said. "But, through a mindfulness response, we can learn to accept our experiences, perceive events differently, and respond more effectively to the everyday hassles of life."
