LUSAKA, Zambia

Inspired by his country's current economic and social plight, author Henry M. Musenge bravely speaks to compensate for the lack of comment from academicians on corruption and dishonesty in the country. His newest novel, "Flames of Gondola" (published by Xlibris UK), exposes the ill effects of corruption, immorality, dishonesty and betrayal in business and the roles they play in the erosion of the country's morale and economy.

Life at Gondola, an Indian owned retail store in Kamwala, is disrupted by the arrival of Chikange, a new Zambian employee, who quickly establishes himself as a favourite of its Chief Executive Officer, Rao, rising rapidly through its ranks. When the economy stutters, suspicions turn on foreign businesses. Do they unfairly exploit the country's economy and illegally divert huge earnings abroad? Are the happenings at Gondola a reflection of a bigger picture?

"The book is the first of its kind in the country-could be the case in many other countries in Southern Africa," Musenge says, "It has come at the right time, when statements from one of the owners of a big mining firms has revealed cheating on profits and taxes by his firm; more or less confirming the theme of the book."

Although presented through a fictional novel, this story touches on more realistic problems faced by the author's country. A voice for the academicians of his country, Musenge's "Flames of Gondola" seeks to remind leaders of the country that "corruption exists and that it does not pay and needs to be checked by the authorities."
