NEW YORK, NY, November 21, 2014 - Bright Awareness Publications, an imprint of Westlake Gavin Publishers, has announced the addition of
Jealous: Helping Kids Cope with Jealousy, the fourth book in their
COLORFEELING series by Author Esther Adler, LMHC, and Illustrator Shrutkirti Kaushal. Each of the
COLORFEELING books is focused on only ONE feeling, vividly portrayed by a child-like animal in a color reflecting that emotion. The main character in
Jealousy is a charismatic green snake with two siblings. "The holiday season is upon us, and with that comes gifts and special events," said Adler. "Children may experience jealousy over sibling's Christmas or Hanukkah presents or experience jealousy when they're not invited to a classmate's holiday party. Although jealousy is a common emotion among children, the solution is not to tell your child to "stop acting like a baby" or "get over it". It is far better to speak it out with your child. Acknowledge the jealousy, don't deny it." In
Jealous, the main character, a green snake, acknowledges that "When I feel jealous, I can't stop thinking that I want it too." Encouraged to think of situations where it has felt envious, the snake admits: · I feel jealous when ... my friend has a new toy. · I feel jealous when ... my brother goes out with my parents. · I feel jealous when ... people tell secrets. · I feel jealous when ... my sister has a bigger slice of cake than me. · Sometimes I feel jealous and don't know why. "I use the
COLORFEELING series (
Anger, Sad, Happy and now
Jealous) in my own therapy work with young children," explains Adler, who is also a mother of six children, ranging in age from six to sixteen. "I was looking for books like these for many years before I decided to write them myself," she recalls. "These books are vividly illustrated with interactive exercises and worksheets designed to stimulate discussion-to help parents, caregivers, educators and therapists assist children in understanding and coping with their emotions." In
Jealous, the green snake realizes that instead of sulking or perhaps exhibiting destructive behavior, it can nicely: · Ask to share a friend's new toy. · Express its feelings. · Remember the special things that belong to it (a family home, toy car and a basketball) · Communicate its feelings in pictures ... drawing a time when the snake felt envious (for example, when its sister got the bigger slice of cake) After acknowledging the validity of a child's feelings of jealousy, a parent, caregiver, educator and therapist, might probe the child on ways in which envy can be positively managed, asking: "What can you do?" Suggestions include: · Draw a picture of how you look when you feel jealous. · List reasons why you feel jealous. · Write a story about a time when you felt jealous. · Think about what you can do to help a person who is jealous feel less jealous. · Circle what you can do when you feel jealous (tell someone how you feel) and what you should not do (take a friend's toy without permission). "As a therapist and a parent, I see a huge difference in response when interacting with children," explained Adler. "When an adult-even a trained therapist-directs questions at a child, the child often become closed and defensive. However, when an adult reads a book to a child, that child can become open and expressive and you have the opportunity to learn so much about what your child is feeling on the inside. This is what I love about the
COLORFEELING series and why I wrote them. It gives me such joy to see parents and children connecting over shared emotions. It's magical."
