For those who have never worked in the healthcare industry-and maybe even those who have-the emergency room is a place of intrigue. This area of the hospital that has inspired many TV shows and movies becomes real as Dr. Steven Bentley shares stories only an ER physician can in his first published book.

In Bentley's book, "A License to Heal: Random Memories of an ER Doctor," he takes readers on a journey from medical school to internship to residency to his 33 years as a practicing ER physician, less any dull moments in between.

He touches on hot topics and provides solutions to better the VA medical system and the current state of the U.S. healthcare industry while sprinkling in personal stories from his interesting experience in the ER.

"The current Veteran's Administration healthcare system-now called the Department of Veterans Affairs-is grossly inept and inefficient," Bentley said. "It fails to provide veterans with the most basic needs in an efficient and timely manner. We promised we would take care of them, and we're not. In my opinion, it's an example of a good idea gone wrong."

Although he recognizes a large number of issues with our healthcare system in "A License to Heal," he cannot deny the incredible influence so many of his patients have had on his life.

"I spent 33 years in the ER," Bentley said. "Some of those years were wonderful, some not so much. What is truly humbling and impressive is the scope of human illness - both triumphant and tragic-that an emergency medicine physician is allowed to help with. In my experience, a lot of being a doctor is simply trying to help the individual cope with their own personal process or tragedy."
