A middle-aged teacher just wants to do his job, but is frustrated with the administrative hurdles and pathological staff members he is forced to confront. A private investigator loses his business but finds love and adventure in spades. A psychologically confused undergraduate seeks knowledge and ends up finding God.

All three characters encounter the complexity of relationships and romance in a society devoted to materialism, sexuality and individualism in author Paul Donovan's new fictional work, "Education: A Collection of Short Stories" (published by Balboa Press AU). The author is embarking on a marketing campaign to promote the book.

"This is a world in which people live with the constant distraction of technology and suffer the fallout of fractured relationships," Donovan says. "Stories like these reflect on these aspects and encourage people to think more deeply about the consequences of these issues and the alternative ways to look at them."

An excerpt from "Education":
A week later, Nina would move out, and I would be left in my apartment with my stuff. For now though, as I drove along, I felt as though I was noticing things for the first time in months-clumps of elm bark trees; smaller, golden branches and leaves, bursting forth in colour in the spring sunshine; the blue sky; the signs above my head. It was good to look at things other than on a screen.
