Child abuse can damage a person for life. The scars left by the betrayal of a loved one can leave the victim debilitated, filling his or her life with agonizing levels of fear and doubt, suspicion, guilt, and self-loathing. The road to recovery, to healing, is fraught with great difficulty, and overcoming the obstacles that come with it may take a lifetime. Edith Mitchell portrays this hard journey with her new book, a poignant tale of love and pain, death and redemption, a story that will introduce readers to "A Stranger Called Life."
Mitchell shows the consequences of violence and abuse, the torturous toll it takes on innocent children, and how lives can be destroyed by the tragedies of the past. The novel follows the life of a girl named Heaven, whose mother was murdered in a robbery attempt. When her father seeks vengeance on the killer, he abandons his daughter, and Heaven ends up growing up in foster homes, environments rife with abuse and neglect. This almost destroys her, but she finds reprieve when a caring social worker takes her to a loving home. This does not last, however, as her past comes back to haunt her, threatening to destroy her entire life.
"A Stranger Called Life" is a realistic story that touches a lot of issues dealing with absent parents, sexual abuse and the dark side of foster care. Mitchell shows the difficulties of healing, and how faith and forgiveness can overcome obstacles to recovery. Through Heaven's tale, readers will learn how not to allow their past to hold the present and the future hostage, for only they can have power over their lives and their fates.
