Author Eddie L. Barnes, with the publication of his 2011 Western novel, "The Diary of a Gunfighter" (published by iUniverse), which is getting a revived marketing push in 2013, explores the traits and mores that make the Western genre what it is.
"The Diary of a Gunfighter" is the story of Simon James Sublette, a man deeply scarred by the Civil War. He sets out wandering the West looking for serenity and finds, instead, strife. He becomes the famous gunfighter known as "the Rhymer" because he speaks in rhyme when stressed. He builds a reputation as a hero to the defenseless and a demon to those who do evil.
An excerpt from "The Diary of a Gunfighter":
"'There are men who are vile and evil....and when they come....they must be eliminated....with the use of the gun. I have a Demon in me, Abigail....he comes when danger is near....he comes uncalled....and he has no fear. The Demon hates the ridicule of women and kids....cruelty for the color of a man's skin....it's something I can't control....my blood quickens.... and I kill again. I just want good folks and me to be left alone....then, Abigail, I'm as gentle as a lamb.' Simon smiled at Abigail. 'But when the Demon is provoked....well then, that's when I am what I am.'"
Barnes knows that his unique creation will appeal to readers. "Simon's diary is written in verse," he notes, "and his trait of speaking in rhymes will intrigue the reader."
