Author was born the youngest of 10 children in a Hindu home in Guyana. The family was poor, and had to survive off the land, living on "the barest of necessities." Despite this, Author recalls her life as simple but beautiful. Her father had high hopes for his daughter, and encouraged Author to find success beyond the borders of Guyana.

At 14, she immigrated to the U.S., where she began working at a department store. She explains the store manager befriended her and seemed to want to help her; this was only a ploy to rape her when he was able to get Author alone. Unsure of what to do, she turned to God - and found hope in the promise of Christ.

Her faith in the Lord gave her the strength to heal, and eventually to achieve her aspirations in becoming a doctor. Having overcome adversity and many obstacles, Author encourages readers to push forward. She says, "Never determine your present situation as a permanent outcome."
