Islam means, "surrendering to the will of God."
A commentary on Muslim beliefs and culture, Suppression of the Muslims, by Dr. Mohammed Haque details the peaceful foundation of Islam and the shaky relationship between Muslims and the Western world. Haque believes that Muslims are portrayed as antagonists in the American media due to cultural misunderstandings and the acts of a few radicals.
"It's important that we recognize and embrace our cultural differences," says Haque. "As human beings, we must preach tolerance and understanding."
Haque scrupulously examines the shaky relationship between the United States and the Muslim world. According to Haque, fundamental differences between Western nations and the Middle East often leads to confusion and intolerance. He believes that recent conflicts with Iraq as well as other political events have led to a negative and inaccurate portrayal of Muslims in mainstream media. Haque outlines his belief that United States foreign policy is hypocritical and actually attempts to weaken Islamic nations.
"Foreign policy should not be repressive to an entire nation," say Haque. "Every country should be allowed to pursue their own development and international squabbles must be solved with the help of the United Nations."
Suppression of the Muslims is a road map to tolerance and a guide to understanding Islamic nations. Haque urges readers to appreciate the differences between Islamic and Western civilizations while recognizing the similarities between all of us as human beings.
