As someone who has worked in the field of education for more than 50 years, Jerry A. Rice, Ed. D. acknowledges the pressing need for reform. He also acknowledges that a fresh way of looking into the problem is necessary if anyone wants to successfully improve the educational system. In the words of Albert Einstein, "No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it." In his book, "The Living School," Dr. Rice explores new ways of thinking about school leadership, organization and learning, gently leading readers to a new viewpoint of schools and the educational process.

"The Living School" presents an alternative approach to the frantic and redundant reform efforts that are occurring in education today. Dr. Rice shows how the current model of education began, how far it has taken the system and why it is no longer a viable model. More importantly, he proposes a completely new organizational theory and process for schools.

Schools, according to the author, should not be managed as if they and all the people in them are machines and machine parts. Reform and effectiveness can only take place if the old perspective is replaced with a more relevant one.

"Schools are living organisms; self organized for the purpose of learning. We need to change our thinking... The theme (of this book) is looking at the school as a living organism, and how the various components of the school relate to one another and are affected by one another. It addresses all aspects, program, resources, environment, and leadership," Dr. Rice says.

A must-read for both educators and legislators, "The Living School" gives a powerful and eye-opening assessment of America's current educational quandary as it brings about a paradigm shift in the way education and learning is viewed.

"The Living School" was featured at the 2013 New York State Reading Association Book Exhibit in City Albany, NY, last Oct. 27 - 29, 2013.
