CLEVELAND - "The GEMS" (published by Xlibris) is an effort to provide a concise and general guide that can help medical students gain access to a global understanding of medical practice as a healing process. By emphasizing healing and process, author Dr. Hussain Isma'eel highlights the difference between healing and disease curing, and also ensures that students are introduced to the "how" of this process in a step by step manner.

As Isma'eel and his colleagues rotated on services, they not only shared with their students clinical information, but also noted how students see them as models that they look up to in order to see how much their instructors do as they say, and to see how they can become like their teachers - or not. After several rotations, Isma'eel and his colleagues recognized that the needs of the students are alike, and therefore they decided to put together a guide that can be used to attend to these needs.

This book is meant to help students gain a global idea about several vital aspects of medicine, it also presents detailed processes and exercises can be used on daily basis. It is novel in linking statistics and clinical reasoning with patient communication, providing tools for students to perform their own 360 degree self-assessment, and it can be easily used by academic physicians as a resource to present discussion initiation material to their students.

Isma'eel says that the practice of medicine transcends beyond disease identification and treatment. It is a human-to-human interaction occurring in a multilayered organization where other humans are also contributing. Practitioners are part of a system that is complex and dynamic, and "The GEMS" prepares trainees for the rigors of being healers responsible for the lives of those under their care.
