Dr. A. J. (Sjaan) Buchel realized that there was a great need for nursery schools in particular less affluent areas and townships in South Africa. The need for a simple recipe-book for pre-school teachers and also under-qualified, pre-school assistants and the need to provide an easy form of preschool learning for the approximately 1.3 million preschoolers without resources in rural South Africa townships and squatter camps prompted her to write "20 Weeks Grade 0/R" (published by AuthorHouse UK).
The book comprises a collection of creative ideas and activities; developmental play; music and movement; rhymes, songs and stories for grade 0/R (preschool children). Every creative activity in this collection is aimed at helping the child to grow into a well-adjusted, happy human being, to prepare him or her for the challenge of formal schooling. All activities are theme related and are there not only for the enjoyment thereof, but serves as a skill development agent at the same time. The activities aim to prepare the child to cope better in the primary school phase as well as later on in life.
"Millions of rural and refugee learners have no resources and access to schooling," Buchel points out. "This book is a relevant help-guide, particularly in areas where there is a need for pre-school (early learning) access, but no facilities combined with a lack of suitable trained teachers. It can be used as preparation and a lesson guide by anyone who can read, and offer some form of schooling in poor and rural areas."
A user friendly guide book to help young learners on their way to adulthood, "20 Weeks Grade 0/R" is the first in a series of books that form a year program for pre-school learners (grade 0/R).
