Things go from bad to worse, and eventually she stops responding to treatment. When reviewing Mary's medical records, her devastated daughter learns that her mother received drugs she was diagnosed as being allergic to during surgery two months before as well as during her stay in the ICU, and receiving a blood thinner in the hospital led to total organ failure.

Donna holds nothing back as she details her emotional struggles with accepting her mother's death, from organizing the funeral to packing up her mother's apartment and facing the new emptiness in her life. Learning the cause of Mary's death shows Donna the importance of being an advocate for oneself or a loved one who is receiving medical treatment, asking questions about treatment every step of the way.
Although she is now retired, Donna Stout worked in real estate and retail sales for most of her career. She was raised in Kentucky and Texas before moving to northern Michigan, where she met and married her husband, Ken. They have four children and four grandchildren.
