Author Don Sweatt believes that there is a real disconnect between the way physical fitness is portrayed nowadays in all of its popularized forms and the way in which it conflicts with the fundamental tenets of physical fitness of the past that emphasizes skill development and integration of the mind and body as the most important aspects in achieving lifelong physical fitness and high level athletic performance. This belief led him in writing "Mind Shift: Stories of Transformative Physical Training and Other Curious Tales," (published by Trafford Publishing) a holistic primer on physical training gone old school.

This book addresses the subject of physical training as it relates to health and fitness from both philosophical and pedagogical perspective. Its premise is about making a mind shift from the current definition and practice of physical fitness as portrayed by many popular fitness media personalities, health and fitness magazines and many big box health clubs, to one in which the acquisition of physical fitness is likened to the study of the martial arts where one follows the path, or commonly referred as the way or (Dao).

"For many readers, especially those involved in martial arts or physical fitness, this book will be a welcome departure from the typical magazine article on exercise, which tends to adhere to what's currently popular," Sweatt points out. "And those who are martial arts enthusiasts, they may relate to the story centered on Master Lo and his followers."

Sweatt hopes the stories in "Mind Shift" about characters striving to achieve physical mastery of a discipline or engaging in a challenging free form of movement for the sheer delight of it, will make readers pause the next time they hear about the latest exercise gimmick or gizmo or the next must have fitness celebrities' workout DVD.
