Author Don J. Metivier was first inspired to write poetry during his high school years. Later, during his military career, much of his professional writing was done in "bullet format" - a compressed style of writing that Metivier says, helped him to more naturally flow into poetic verse. Following the military, he continued to write and is now publishing his first collection of poetry, "Poems from the Mind of a Madman: Passionate Works of Poetry For Modern Times" (published by AuthorHouse).
Metivier's poetry contains a mixture of themes, ranging from dark to light and even some that are based in fantasy. He creates motifs from experiences of his childhood, military career and post-military life.
"My characters are the subject matters I visit," Metivier says. "Each one is an opportunity for exploration into how it made me feel at the time."
"Poems from the Mind of a Madman" is written to connect with readers' psyches. Metivier believes though readers might not have had the exact same experience he had, they will be able to relate to the emotions surrounding these events - emotions he highlights in each of his poems.
Writers like Emerson, Thoreau, Frost, Poe and Salinger inspired much of Metivier's style. He even carried a copy of Frost's "The Road Not Taken" with him throughout his military career to give him inspiration. Though he drew inspiration from these literary greats, he states that the poetry in his book is uniquely his own. He hopes his poetry, likewise, will inspire his readers.
