History links the present into the far past, answering questions and painting a picture of what has been. Author Digby Asterrne takes the readers back into the 1700s when Great Britain continue to circumnavigate the world in search for new territories and the flare of Industrial Revolution was about to get started with his new publication, 60 Miles,17000 Miles.
The book covers the history of mainly Great Britain from 1700 through to the 1850 period. France and America are mentioned in some chapters, having played an integral role with Great Britain. It was around that time when politics was overtaken by the flare of industrial revolution, and when the general public was transported to the shores of America then Australia as they require man power at a cheap cost. Prisoners are sent in both countries as penance. Most of the major inventions that time have been detailed, including the discovery of canal systems and steam power, and later on, steam boats.
The Australian continent was proven to be valuable to the British as parts of it are discovered and settlements are built around Botany Bay, Port Jackson, then Sydney of New South Wales. Just a few years after, Hobart in Tasmania followed. When overpopulated, some settlers of Tasmania ventured across to what is now Melbourne, Victoria. Politics of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania is covered in the last Chapters of the book.
60 Miles,17000 Miles brilliantly covers the history of Great Britain, closely following its progress from the time of the industrial revolution to the discovery of other settlements. It gives helpful insights to finer points in history that are easily taken for granted, providing a clear picture of how the doors of Australia and New Zealand opened to the Westerners after the expedition of James Cook.
