Deloris Dallas Releases New Memoir

PORTLAND, Ore.

Author Deloris Dallas recounts her epic journey from Jamaica to America in her new memoir, "I Thought I Wouldn't Tell It: A Memoir of Hard Life and Hope" (published by Abbott Press).

Growing up in Jamaica, Dallas often felt that the island's beauty contradicted the ugliness of her home life. She faced an abusive life as a child, culminating with her parents abandoning her. She grew up in a foster home where adults often betrayed her trust.

Dallas eventually made the decision to leave her homeland for the United States. This was not an easy decision as it required her to break the law and leave her children behind. Along her journey, she confronts a host of unsavory characters, including human traffickers.

Through years of hard work, Dallas is able to return to Jamaica to rescue her children from poverty and bring them to the U.S. "I Thought I Wouldn't Tell It" shows how all of the adversity Dallas faced helped her to grow into the strong woman she is today.

An excerpt from "I thought I Wouldn't Tell It":

"I told myself, When I go back to Jamaica, it'll be to bring my children out. I had left all five behind, a very difficult thing to do. Four were safe and being cared for by Rupert and his family, my eldest daughter still lived with my father, but they weren't with me, which hurt. I have no time to waste, I thought, because I already miss them, especially the baby. My plan was to do everything I could to keep them from having a childhood like the one I'd had."

Deloris Dallas is a wife, mother, author and entrepreneur. A native of Jamaica, she immigrated to the United States and became a certified medical assistant and a practical nurse. She also worked as a teacher's assistant and operated a Jamaican restaurant with her husband. The couple opened Dallas Foster Home in 2005 to provide a safe and caring home for children. They currently live in Portland, Oregon
