'Degeneratively Happy' by Azelia Stokes Gets New Marketing Campaign

Direct care worker, home health aide and patient safety monitor are some of the job titles readers would see in the résumé of Azelia Penny Stokes. She lives her life based on Christian principles and values, and always helps others. Seeing how she epitomizes one of her mottos, “Be kind to everyone you meet for everyone is going through something,” readers would come to believe Stokes has lived a beautiful life. Quite the contrary, this biracial woman has been a victim of domestic violence. She reveals her harrowing experiences in her published autobiography, titled “Degeneratively Happy” (published by Xlibris in January 2013).

Set for a new marketing campaign, the book tells the true story of a biracial woman whose life was a challenge from birth. Stokes’ parents loved her from the day she entered their lives. There was so much love as she was growing up not only from her mom, dad and grandmother but also from other close relatives and friends of the family. Stokes believed people outside of her home was also kind and genuine until around middle school where she was faced with reality.

What seemed to bother Stokes most was how some individuals were just mean for no apparent reason. Her teen years however would be nothing compared to the rude awakening she would experience as a woman. Two of the men who told her they loved her would abuse her. The book on family and relationships takes readers through some of her journey — a journey most described as an emotional rollercoaster; however, one day the ride stops.

“Degeneratively Happy” reaches out to biracial woman, and all the victims of domestic violence. By sharing her trials and triumphs, Stokes wants to empower many people to rise above their predicaments. It is her hope that by publishing her personal memoir, many more would come to understand that they are not alone in their journey, and come to share their own stories for others’ benefit. Azelia Stokes was born in Brooklyn, New York. The Brooklyn-born native is a graduate of St. Josephs High School. Moreover, she attended New York City Technical College (City University of New York) to pursue a degree in human services. She lives her life based on Christian principles and values, and the importance of kindness. She enjoys swimming, yoga and now writing. She is married with four children. She currently resides in the Bronx, New York.
