Debra A. Garland, a retired educator, teacher and principal, has completed her first book "One Summer Day": a gripping and potent journey of intrigue, love and war that depicts the compassion and struggles of a family.

"One Summer Day is a multi-cultural story about a boy and his family who live in a country with political strife. The family needs to prepare to flee their homeland when the outbreak of war occurs. The reader learns that "home" is anywhere that the family can be together and live in peace," said author Debra A. Garland when asked to summarize her new book.

Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Debra A. Garland's poignant tale is a courageous work of fiction in which the main characters live through the hardships of war and strife.

It was a time of pure chaos, a time where violence and fear rules. With civil war looming in the beautiful island of Ecuador, the Zapata's, a small family of four, quietly planned their escape from all the destruction and their possible death from war. Using their family's small fishing boat, Havier and Maria Zapata with their parents, braved the sea and its dangers, and an uncertain future with hope of their salvation-living in peace in a new land.

Readers who wish to experience this inspiring work can purchase"One Summer Day" at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.
