The cross campus presentations will entail discussions led by Professor/Writer/Activist David S. McCabe regarding the moral obligation that educators must bear in supporting the rights of undocumented students; his work with Dreamers and the DREAM act; the work of writing in pursuit of Social Justice as well as the challenges faced by novice authors. A reading of McCabe's debut novel Without Sin (ISBN: 978-0-86534-878-3, $24.95), Q&A and a book signing will follow.
Without Sin is a work of literary fiction inspired by actual events that took place in Oceanside, California where the FBI, INS and San Diego County Sheriff shut down a sex trafficking ring that exploited young, undocumented women and children. The novel chronicles the exploits of a border patrol agent and an ill-starred seventeen-year-old Mexican prostitute as they struggle to come to terms with the increasing violence and changing politics that govern the borderlands dividing their countries.
Without Sin was recognized as a semi-finalist with the William Faulkner Words and Music Competition and the California State Library and the California Center for the Book have presented Without Sin with the 2013 Book to Action award. This is a prestigious grant and award is given to works of literature that speak to challenging issues and compel readers to take positive action to address them.
