An estimated one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Author David Fredette is a testament to this statistic, after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1998.

David Fredette's first book, Latent Heat, is a personal poetic novel based on his emotional journey through his first year after being hospitalized for bipolar disorder.

"This book is a reflection of how I cope with mental illness, as well as the rest of life's challenges," said Fredette.

Latent Heat expresses a timelines of experiences, emotions and evolutions Fredette made within one year to better his life. He signs and dates the poems, which are arranged chronologically.

"He (Fredette) writes the beautiful, lyric poem 'Easter,' which features from its first stanza the most stunning image of the brief volume, its intellectual fabric containing concise reflection on the nature of religious belief," said Kirkus Reviews.

These original poems were created to be inspirational, encouraging and to help others who may be suffering from a mental illness.

"I want to reduce the stigma on mental illness," said Fredette.
