In his historical fiction novel, "1300 Moons" (published by Trafford Publishing), which is getting a renewed marketing push in 2013, author David D. Plain, a member of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, shares the oral traditions of his people in a story about an important chief from his nation's past.

"1300 Moons" is based on the story of Saulteux Ojibwa Chief Kioscance, or Young Gull, who lived during the French régime in North America. The book follows him from a youth through his years as a warrior, to great war chief, to elder on the council. Young Gull led his people south after the Iroquois War to establish them at Aamjiwnaang at the foot of Lake Huron.

An excerpt from "1300 Moons":

"Kioscance was about 12 years of age and the son of an Ojibwa chief. One day Young Gull was alone in the forest. He was on his "first hunt" a tradition that required him to hunt and kill either a game bird or animal alone. This was the Ojibwa way for a boy to move toward manhood. It was always so. The forest was a formidable place for a young boy, full of dark corners in which lurked the wiindgookwe. They were mischievious fairies that would play tricks on the Ojibwa, especially young boys."

Plain is a direct descendent of the main character, and he draws from his family's tradition oral stories as well as his research to lend authenticity to the story. "Readers should take away a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment as well as a more in-depth knowledge of the history of the Great Lakes and native culture," he says.
