For nearly two decades, Daniel Eckstein, Ph.D., has written the quarterly column "For Couples" for The Family Journal. Written directly to and for couples, Eckstein's articles were also useful resources for counselors and form the inspiration behind his new book, "The Couple's Match Book: Lighting, Rekindling, or Extinguishing the Flame" (published by Trafford Publishing).

In "The Couple's Match Book", Eckstein explores relationship theory and research through self-assessment activities. "This is a 'hands on' series of activities for couple renewal," he explains. "Each activity features questionnaires, interview guidelines and other work sheets for couples. Chapters are organized based on the following four ways of accessing couples: understanding and respecting personality differences, role perceptions, communication and problem-solving skills."

"The Couple's Match Book" also shares personal stories written by couples detailing their own experiences in an effort to help others in improving their intimate relationships.

In "The Couple's Match Book", Eckstein writes: "This book addresses the need for relationship, the desire for partnership which goes beyond basic biological procreation by addressing the hunger of the heart. But it is also here that emotional wounding also occurs. There are countless ways in which we can be wounded. This is not a book about how or why this occurs. Rather, this is a book about how to renew, revitalize, and repair such wounding."

Eckstein hopes "The Couple's Match Book" will help couples see themselves and their significant other in a different light.

"Too many marriages end in divorce," says Eckstein. "In times of stress one's most intimate partner can be the person where so much tension is displaced; relationship repair activities such as those in the book can help heal wounds and promote stronger and more solid bounds."

"The Couple's Match Book" can be used as a supplemental text in marriage and family courses, as well as a primary resource in couples counseling and marriage and family therapy.
