In his new book "Rounds with Jim: A Medical Biography" (published by WestBow Press), author and medical doctor Craig Jurgensen takes readers through the personal story of how and why he developed a personal approach to treating patients.
After witnessing his church pastor suffer and die from Parkinson's disease, Jurgensen set his career plans. He began working toward becoming a physician and practicing neurology. Many years later, his friend and colleague developed Parkinson's disease as well. Now equipped with training and knowledge, Jurgensen was able to professionally treat his friend for 10 years, and then continually - after retirement - as a friend and advocate.
An excerpt from "Rounds with Jim:"
"His once booming baritone voice had withered to a whisper. His once powerful posture and stride had slowed to a shuffle. His once firm hands had become tremulous and frail. Along with pity, I felt helpless. I remember thinking I wish I could do something to help."
Jurgensen hopes his book enlightens readers to a different way of approaching medical care. "Medical delivery today is an impersonal business. Commercial, regulated, inflated, contracted, litigated, marketed and advertized," he says. "After retirement from my office-based practice in 2007, I was able to apply the humanistic art of medicine in my visitations to Jim."
