ATHENS, Ga.

In his new book, "The Village and Beyond: Memoirs of a Cotton Mill Boy" (published by iUniverse), author William Hale tells the story of how a big mill village family lived in the Great Depression. From the eyes and heart of a vulnerable young boy, Hale relates how his experiences followed him deep into the years and still into his life as an octogenarian.

A different style of memoir, "The Village and Beyond" is not a chronological account, but rather a series of stories which cluster around family, village, work, church and mystery. Hale's stories describe his search for the moments that encouraged him to become a man of curiosity.

"I tend to romanticize the Depression where others have told the story with pathos and a derogatory feeling about the people," Hale says. "Life during the Depression is seen through the mind of a boy who was innocent of the woes of the times but enjoyed the difference in how family was done."

A lifelong teacher, Hale hopes to imbue on older and younger generations alike the importance of story in setting one's values and driving one's actions as well as transferring heritage from one generation to the next.
