ESSEX, N.Y., Sept. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ Following 30 years of research and advocacy, two visionaries in college access have come together to share best practices for helping students attain degrees and 21 st century jobs in their book College For Every Student: A Practitioner's Guide to Building College and Career Readiness.

Rick Dalton, founder and CEO of College For Every Student, and Ed St. John, University of Michigan professor, share their innovative and practical strategies for improving opportunities for low-income students.

"There's lots of talk globally about college and career readiness but there are very few solutions," said St. John. "The book comes out at a very important time and provides resources and tools for education, business and community leaders to help students build essential college and career readiness skills."

According to the book, a generation ago, students only needed a high school diploma to ensure a good job. However, today, a college degree is the "new finish line" and the best chance for a low-income student to break the poverty cycle.

"But moving students toward college isn't enough," said Dalton. "We need to ensure that our young people are ready for the workplace with essential skills like adaptability, problem solving, leadership, and grit."

This comprehensive guidebook provides a wealth of resources and tools for practitioners to achieve educational uplift in urban and rural schools.

"College For Every Student is a clear and compelling evidence-based blueprint for fostering college and career readiness for the U.S. and beyond," said William Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard College.

"We believe that everyone has a role to play," said Dalton. "Every business, school, and college must develop a playbook for equipping students with college and career readiness strategies."

The book focuses on tactics that include:

  • fostering mentoring programs
  • helping students master the Essential Skills
  • building science, technology, engineering & math (STEM) awareness and interest
  • providing out-of-the-classroom experiences such as internships, apprenticeships, and job shadowing.
