In "We're Doing WHAT for Summer Vacation?" (published by AuthorHouse), authors Cindy Davis and Ali Rollason take readers on a nonfictional journey as they follow a family as they travel across Borneo.
Readers meet Ali, a typical 9-year-old American girl, whose summer dreams of spending time laying on a beach in Florida are shattered when her parents decide the family is going to Borneo. Her parents, former hippies, want a big summer adventure. This, however, is not the big adventure Ali wanted.
Once on her way, Ali finds herself living in a tree house; encountering bedbugs; learning about Muslim culture; eating strange food; going whitewater rafting; getting trapped in a stairwell alone, which makes her think she is being kidnapped; trekking in the jungle; experiencing leeches; staying with the locals in their houses; finding real skulls from headhunters; discovering an island of lost children, and scuba diving with turtles bigger than she was.
An excerpt from the book:
"As we were walking down the path, Zak yelled, 'Move, Ali!' I turned around and an orangutan was walking right beside me. I stepped aside so he could get around me. Then another orangutan walked right by Zak. It was like they were following us and walking back and forth past us. I could have reached out and touched the cute little orangutan (well, not so little)."
