Cigar Advisor Publishes CIGARS 101

Cigar Advisor has just published a new "Cigars 101" guide to fighting and removing mold from a cigar humidor, by Executive Editor Hayward "Lou" Tenney.

As Tenney explains, "Heat, moisture, and organic material are a surefire recipe for the growth of mold. Unfortunately, these conditions also describe a cigar humidor that is properly maintained. Indeed, to care for cigars is to walk a razor's edge: too much heat and humidity, and you risk developing mold and tobacco beetles. Not enough moisture, and you risk your cigars drying out and becoming stale."

He elaborates that it's improper to think of mold spores as the actual problem, because they occur environmentally. Rather, that real enemy is storing cigars at a temperature and humidity that are too high. Under these conditions, mold will not only affect one's cigars, but can also affect the humidor itself, leaving behind an offensive scent.

To combat mold in a humidor, Tenney suggests brushing it away gently so as not to stain the wood. Then, kill the mold spores with a solution of distilled water and rubbing alcohol. Optionally, he also advises sanding the humidor's interior with fine-grit sandpaper, and using baking soda to mitigate any lingering odors.

Finally, he provides a method for "re-seasoning" the humidor, while emphasizing the importance of proper conditions for preventing a future mold outbreak.
