Christian Counselor Twila Pearson Offers Faith-based Guidance to Teenagers

In "The Challenging Years: Shedding Light on Teen Sexuality" (published by WestBow Press), Twila Pearson's 2012 book of Christian advice for adolescents, young people are given a guide to navigating the pitfalls of growing up in a sexualized society, identifying the risks of casual sex and consequences of going against God's design.
"The Challenging Years" closely examines the development of adolescents from puberty to adulthood, exploring how the lives of young people are directed by the choices they make. Pearson guides readers toward understanding that many of the influences they encounter lead them in the wrong direction. She takes a Christian approach to leading teenagers through their difficult transition into adulthood. "God's principals for life from the scriptures are not to spoil their fun but to enhance their lives," she says.

"God made us male and female to fit together beautifully and to bond intimately within the marriage relationship. God created sex for both pleasure and reproduction. The matrimonial bond was designed to safeguard the home and family, binding the family together in love. We are to be interconnected and dependent on God as the head of our relationship. God made us that way."
Pearson wants readers to consider abstinence as the best alternative for prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and to see that sex within the confines of marriage is the best alternative. "Sex is something that is a matter that confronts every individual in their lifetime," she says. "What decisions they make when confronted with the decision of whether to or not, when, where, and how and what the impact of the decision is universal."

Twila Pearson is a woman of faith with a Ph.D. in counseling psychology and a master's degree in psychiatric nursing, currently working as a nurse practitioner. She has worked for over 10 years with adolescents with behavioral problems as a nurse in a state hospital. She is married with a daughter and three grandchildren. The thing in her life that prompted her to go into nursing and psychology was her experience of having a son with leukemia. It was also this experience that started her passion to write.
