Man is not meant to live alone, and the first human on Earth begins to feel lonely, comforted only by his three kindred spirits: a huge eagle, a mighty bear and a majestic lion. In this new retelling of the Genesis story, the Father first sends an angel named Eva, but the match proves to be a poor one. He tries again by combining the essence of Eva with Man's rib, forming Eve, the first woman. The story follows a similar path to the biblical version, with Eve's actions leading Man to a terrible temptation that will have lasting repercussions.

"In the Beginning..." shows Father's attempts to make his creation happy. Eva, naturally drawn to order, proves to be a disappointment to Man because she refuses to help with his work, insisting she's just there to talk to him. Eventually, Man's frustration boils over and Father takes Eva away and creates Eve, a beautiful woman who seems to know just what Man wants. Man and Eve find happiness together, but eventually, Man's work classifying plants keeps him away from Eve, who yearns for a kindred spirit of her own. She finds new companionship in a peculiar scaled creature named Sepher.

The other kindred spirits have a nagging feeling that Sepher isn't quite what he seems, but they accept him into the group. His influence on Eve is soon apparent, and she gives in to her curiosity, experimenting at his encouragement and eventually tasting fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Sepher encourages her to have Man taste the fruit as well, but she must use her feminine wiles and trick him into doing so. Father learns of Sepher's plot and gives Man an impossible task to prevent it. Can Man find the courage to complete Father's request, or will he be doomed to failure?
