In "Junebug" (published by Balboa Press), the new novel by Cherie Doyen, readers are given a look through the eyes of a unique survivor of child abuse during her spiritual search for understanding her chaotic experiences.

"Junebug" is told through the eyes and voice of June. Readers gain an intimate look into her observations and thoughts, as well as her need to understand why. She explores creative solutions to dealing with and maneuvering through issues that other people are uncomfortable talking about. She leads readers through her discovery of "a place of magic and order, a place where things make sense." Here, she processes her life and discovers she's no victim. She's a survivor.

An excerpt from "Junebug":

"I just look at her. Lying there I get very still, very quiet. She pulls the stopper and the water begins to drain. I shut my eyes. I can feel myself being released from the confines of my body and this place they call my home. As the water begins to swirl around the drain, I can feel myself being pulled with the f low. I have the feeling of being afraid and peaceful at the same time."

Doyen hopes the openness and honesty in "Junebug" gives readers a refreshing perspective on how people heal from the trauma of child abuse. "In looking through the lens of a survivor rather than a victim we see the ingenuity, the heightened senses, the clear connection to the ethers and the resilience," she says. "With pride we can understand that because of the depth of our pain our capacity for love is equally as deep."
