Reading and telling stories present opportunities to teach children important lessons. According to K. Sean Buvala, professional storyteller and founder of storyteller.net, stories help children gain better understanding of other people and cultures. Parents who are looking for storybooks that teach children about social awareness, acceptance and compassion may want to get a copy of Charlotte Cooper's latest storybook, "Gerry Mouse" (published by Xlibris).

Cooper has worked as a hospital social worker for over 40 years. During this time, she observed how many indigent children and adults faced discrimination. Moved by what she witnessed, she wrote "Gerry Mouse," a heartwarming, modern-day fable about a little mouse who faces obstacles beyond his control and understanding - homelessness, lack of a family and poverty. Through this eye-opening story, the first-time author hopes to raise awareness about the plight of indigent children and ultimately encourage the more privileged members of society to help them.

"Sadly there are many children in our country that are in a very similar situation to Gerry Mouse," Cooper says, "These children are surrounded by big people who are too consumed by their own problems to realize that they are adding to the little ones' problems."

Accompanied by fully colored illustrations, "Gerry Mouse" is a timely tale that sheds light on some of today's most pressing problems. It is a story for all ages; even adults will learn a thing or two from the issues raised in this book.
