'Charlie Dead' Wins Award in Best Self-Published Novel Contest

Think there's nothing new in the world of zombies? A new sci-fi suspense-thriller by author Geoff Camphire is reanimating the genre, just in time for Halloween 2016.

"Charlie Dead and the So-Called Zombie Apocalypse," the first book in the convention-defying "Charlie Dead" series, is being named the second-place winner in the James River Writers 2016 Best Self-Published Novel Contest at an awards ceremony during the James River Writers Conference in Richmond, Virginia, on October 16, 2016.

"To be recognized in a respected literary competition like this one, which receives so many exceptional entries from authors nationwide, is just an incredible honor," says author Geoff Camphire. "I never expected to win this kind of recognition with my offbeat, little zombie book. I'm over the moon!"

Through the struggles of teenager Charlie Dunlap, newly infected with the zombie virus, the "Charlie Dead" trilogy explores what it means to live with the "unliving." Who is inhuman? Who is dehumanized? Where other zombie tales stick to predictable fight-or-flight storylines, Camphire creates a unique fictional world in "Charlie Dead," one that mirrors the political, ethical and emotional complexity of today's real world.

"Zombies invite us to tackle the hard questions of free will and what it means to be really alive," says Camphire. "Who can Charlie trust? In a world where 'normals' find themselves in a tense standoff with 'Infected Americans,' it's not always easy to tell who the real monsters are."
