Inspired to record his family history and their role within the British Empire, author MIKE 'Maj' JENVEY has penned "Chalk, Baked Beans, and Bog Rolls" (published by AuthorHouse), a thought-provoking story that plays upon the diverse emotions created through the themes of fun, philosophy, family and friends.
"From birth to death, life's central theme is love and the constant beacon of life shines out hope," JENVEY says.
This autobiography takes readers through 70 years of the author's life in South Africa, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and England. Filled with frolics down memory lane and nuances/aromas from Africa, "Chalk, Baked Beans, and Bog Rolls" powerfully expresses the joys of life he felt while having a ceaseless zest for living. Each short look into his eventful life brings a string of humorous and serious anecdotes about military, education and retail with themes ranging from travel to the arts. "Chalk, Baked Beans, and Bog Rolls" is sure to entertain readers every read.
An excerpt from the book:
"The end of day's reward lay in a Kariba sunset. Only a Zimbabwean or a Kariba tourist will ever understand the ritual of silently observing this sunset. The sun sinks as a gigantic, blazing emblem, a fiery, incendiary inferno offered to assuage Nyaminyami's appetite. As the scarlet orb slowly submerges below the horizon, so the placid waters of Kariba turn orange, then flame and clearly reflect the grey, distorted limbs of the petrified, water-logged, mopani trees standing tall, reaching for the darkening skies. The luckiest local will hear the substantial silence pierced by the keening cry of the black-and-white fish eagle seeking its lifelong mate. Silence quickly descends, only to be broken by the gentle whirring of numerous insect wings."
